Getting Off The Plateau: How to Improve Yourself

by | Sep 28, 2024 | BR Knows How | 0 comments

Think about a plateau: a mountain landform with a flat terrain in an area near/on the top. Now envision it as a state in one’s life: a continuous rise and then you just stay put at a certain level. Have you ever experienced this? You’ve reached a particular stage in your life and then just stayed there, making your days feel stagnant?

Don’t worry, everyone has experienced that in some way. Sometimes, we find ourselves on pause when it comes to things like our careers, our health, and our habits because we find comfort in these interludes – these plateaus. However, you can’t really blame yourself for staying there because it gets comfortable living within your own horizons. But you also can’t blame yourself for wanting more in your current situation.

Say you want to achieve a better build for your body but you already found comfort in your current workout routine and physique. Maybe you find yourself stuck in a dead-end job. Maybe you took up the guitar as a hobby but still only know how to play the same handful of songs you started practicing with. Overall, you want to achieve greater heights, reach bigger goals, and go to the peak of the mountain but realize you’re stuck at the plateau.

The truth is, if you want to improve your situation, you’ll have to improve yourself.

If you don’t know where to start then you’re in luck because Brand Republic (BR) is here to help you get off your plateaus and kickstart your journey to self-improvement! Whatever aspect of yourself you may want to develop, here’s our general guide for you:

  1. What do you want? When do you want it?

Before you start improving your current situation, you must first establish where you are heading. Try listing down the specifics of the goals you want to achieve. Do you want to play more complicated songs on the guitar? List them down! Doing this would help you closely monitor your progress, and not lose focus. How else are you going to better yourself if you don’t know where your improvement is heading?

  1. Status update…

Just like how setting goals helps you understand what you want to achieve in the future, journaling helps you see your situation in the present. Write down your feelings, what you’re grateful for, the things you want to improve, and anything that comes to mind actually! Have you ever wondered how detailed journaling can transform your self-awareness? A high school student meticulously recording everything, even her water intake, might seem overwhelming. But these organized notes have such great significance if you look at it on a bigger scale. Unfiltered thoughts reveal the current mindset, offering a fresh perspective that identifies improvement. So if you’re seeking clarity about your own state, try journaling!

  1. World peace!

Of course, it’s hard to improve yourself in every aspect if you’re in a negative environment. So try to be kinder to yourself, make mistakes in the process of improvement, and be more thoughtful to those around you. Have you ever faced frustration in group projects due to subpar contributions? Try looking at it from a different perspective. How would you feel if you were in their position? Always, always remember to be kind towards others because everyone is navigating their own challenges while still trying their hardest to deliver their best work. So, while you are also making your own situation better, being kind to yourself and to others gives everyone a positive environment that allows us to discover ourselves and grow, so we can be the best versions of ourselves!

Overall, self-improvement is said to be a very personal process, so take time doing it in your own way. When things get overwhelming, categorize and choose the aspects that you want to focus on first. You get to be responsible for your own life because the person who would benefit the most from self-improvement is… yourself!

Contrary to what some might say, life is not a race, it’s a hike. It has rocky paths, steep climbs, and plateaus you can rest on, so it doesn’t really matter who finishes and achieves their goals first. What truly matters is who keeps on striving to improve themselves and reach higher altitudes.
