Filipino Slangs: The Driver of Trends

BOOGSH, DASURV! Kimiiii. Sino ka diyan?

Ito lang naman ang mga usual terms na naririnig o nakikita ng netizens ngayon sa socmed — oh, ‘di mo rin alam ‘yan? Social media ‘yan! Anyway, generally kasi Filipinos are fond of making up new words or giving new definitions to them. Madalas pa nga, binabaliktad natin ang mga salita like dehins (hindi), olats (talo), tsikot (kotse), at amats (tama). Mind you, these words are from 70s – 90s pa, so that means marami na talagang nagdaan na mga salita. And now, since the Filipino language is dynamic, every generation continues reversing the syllables of different words or creates new terms that drive trends (mostly humorous) in the online world.

Trending ka na, mhie!

Pawer. Lodi. Petmalu. In a sentence, “More pawer sa’yo, lods! Petmalu ka talaga!”

The word “pawer” was popularized by Filipino vlogger, Cong TV. At dahil marami siyang subscribers sa YouTube, many young Filipinos used it. Since then, it has been applied in different contexts. As for “petmalu,” though we couldn’t trace the origin of this word, it went viral when it was used to describe the TV sensation, Xander Ford. Simula noon, marami nang gumamit nito to describe someone na magaling o nakakabilib. You see, more often than not, influencers use and highlight slangs in their vlogs or posts to help them become relevant and be known by the public. And the same thing could be said for brands. Usually, ang mga advertising or marketing agencies ng mga brands na ‘to hop on viral words so that they could be relevant and more appealing sa target market. In short, alam kasi ng agencies how big of a positive impact ang magagawa ng pag-hop sa trends on social media para maging big (if not bigger) ang hawak nilang product/s.

Ang classic example ng ganitong strategy was implemented by a famous ride-hailing and delivery service company. In one of their posts, they tried to play on their brand name as they partnered with a well-known mobile wallet app — ginamit lang naman nila ang word na “kas” sa content nila, which is one way of how Filipinos say  “cash.” This content generated a lot of haha reacts dahil maliban sa funny, relatable pa ito.

Aside from that, another notable brand is a Filipino food chain who jumped on the “eyy” trend. Dahil this term was popularized by a well-loved member ng super sikat na Filipino girl group ngayon, it gained a loooot of reactions and comments!

Oh, ‘di ba? You see, hindi talaga makakaila (MAKAKAILA???) na malaki ang impluwensiya ng internet sa atin lalo dahil nadadala o na-a-apply na natin ‘yung mga nakikita natin online in real life. Kaya naman when we see a brand hop on a trend, usually natutuwa tayo at finofollow natin ang page — in the hopes na maglabas sila ng ganung klaseng content muli. Kasi let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be happy seeing that your fave fastfood chain posted a trendy content while still incorporating its brand personality? Of course, anyone would find that witty (if done correctly) and funny. In short, it’s fun and it hits straight right to the feels. Kaya nga sobrang dalas ng mga tao na mag-browse online because various posts relieve their stress, and seeing this from different brands is entertaining and makes us feel a sense of belongingness or connection (wuw), hence, they go viral or are loved by many.

However, gusto ko lang ‘din i-point out ang operative words na DONE CORRECTLY. Siyempre when you ride on a trend, make sure na talagang funny, relatable, and hindi offensive ang ilalabas na content. Baka imbis na mag-viral in a good way, eh mapasama pa ang brand niyo. Who would want that, right? Siyempre wala. Dapat good vibes lang with the netizens, ‘yung pagiging powerful ng words should be used positively pa rin, okay?

Words are the TRUE weapons

At ayan na nga. Kung soldiers ang mga Pilipino and the Filipino language is our weapon, for sure panalo na tayo sa kahit anong laban. This never-ending dynamic will ALWAYS be part of our lives because it’s already part of our culture, parte na rin ito ng kung sino tayo. At kung paano ito makakatulong sa atin? Simple lang, we can surely make connections with other people kahit sa socmed na lang madalas ang way of communicating natin. Plus, making connections online is also a part of us now, we’re just doing it in different ways or approaches, which also includes communicating through powerful words with each other that we enjoy as one culture.
